How viewing distance is calculated

There are two distances that matter. The field-of-view distance is geometric: to fill about a 40° horizontal view (immersive) you sit at roughly the screen's width; a relaxed 30° view is farther back. The sharp-text distance is where a pixel shrinks to about one arcminute — 3437.75 ÷ PPI inches — so higher-resolution screens can be viewed closer without seeing pixels. In practice, sit far enough for crisp text but close enough for a comfortable field of view, with the top of the screen at or just below eye level.

How far should I sit from my monitor?

A common guideline is to sit roughly an arm's length away (20–40 inches) with the top of the screen at or just below eye level. Geometrically, sitting where the screen fills about a 30–40 degree field of view is comfortable — that works out to about 30 inches for a 27-inch monitor and farther for larger or ultrawide screens. How far should I sit from a 27-inch monitor?

About 30–43 inches (75–110 cm) for a comfortable field of view. At 1440p a 27-inch monitor is around 109 PPI, so past roughly 32 inches you can no longer resolve individual pixels and text looks crisp.

What is the ideal TV or large-monitor viewing distance?

For a large 4K screen used as a monitor or TV, an immersive distance fills about a 40 degree field of view — roughly 1x the screen width. A 55-inch 16:9 TV is about 48 inches wide, so an immersive distance is around 4 feet, and a relaxed distance is farther. 4K resolution lets you sit closer than 1080p without seeing pixels.

Does resolution change the ideal viewing distance?

Yes, for sharpness. Higher resolution (more PPI) lets you sit closer before pixels become visible. Field-of-view distance depends only on the physical width, but the sharp-text distance shrinks as pixel density rises — a 4K panel can be viewed much closer than a 1080p panel of the same size.
